Assignment #3: Long Exposure

Assignment: Long Exposure
Due Date: January 27, 2009

To date, you have been told, "DO NOT SHOOT WITH A SHUTTER SPEED BELOW 1/60th OF A SECOND." The reason for this is that you have been handholding your camera to make your photographs thus far. If you were to use a slower shutter speed, you risk introducing camera shake to your photographs. But what if you did not hand hold your camera? What would happen if we use slow shutter speeds?

For your next assignment, you are going to explore using slower shutter speeds! You will be able to capture subjects in a different way than the human eye sees. Therefore, your photographs for this assignment will have strong visual appeal.

Your exposure for this assigment must be longer than 1 second. It is strongly recommended that you use a tripod for this assignment. You are welcome to use any of the techniques we talked about (light painting, abstract light, motion).

Composition (25pts) ~ How well is the photograph composed? Is it appropriate for the subject? Does the composition enhance the center of interest?

Light (25pts) ~ What is the quality of light? Is this fitting for the subject? Does the light enhance the subject?

Creativity (15pts) ~ Is the photograph original? Is it creative?

Technique (15pts) ~ Is the photograph properly exposed? Are highlights and shadows properly exposed?

Processing (10pts) ~ Is the processing appropriate for the subject matter? Does the processing enhance the image?

Effort (10pts) ~ Did the photographer put in the necessary effort required for the assignment?

If you have any questions regarding the assignment, please address them as soon as possible so that you will have ample time to complete it.

Assignment #2: Light and Shadows

Photography 101
Assignment #2: “Light and Shadow”
Skill: Technique
Due Date: Tuesday, December 16

By now, you should have come to the realization that photography is all about capturing a subject in ‘good light’. You should see that photos taken in ‘good light’ are often more captivating that those that are not. In addition, photos that contain shadows that enhance a subject are often more appealing.

For assignment #2, you will be required to capture a scene/subject that contains both elements of light and shadow. Your goal should be to enhance a scene/subject by using light and shadow. There is no limitation for your subject.

Regulations: Final ‘PRINTversion’ should be 8x12 by 300ppi. ‘WEBversion’ should be 8x5.33 by 100ppi.

Your assignment will be graded on the following criteria:

COMPOSITION (25pts): How well is the photograph composed? Is it appropriate for the subject? Does the composition enhance the center of interest?

LIGHT (25pts): What is the quality of light? Is this fitting for the subject? Does the light enhance the subject?

CREATIVITY (15pts): Does the photograph display original thought?

TECHNIQUE (15pts): Is the photograph ‘properly’ exposed? Are highlights and shadows appropriately exposed?

PROCESSING (10pts): Is the processing appropriate for the subject matter? Does the processing enhance the image?

EFFORT (10pts): Did the photographer apply himself/herself to the best of their ability?

If you have any questions regarding the assignment, please address them as soon as possible so that you will have ample time.

Welcome to Gallery Seventeen Hundred, Philadelphia Academy Photography Program's blog!

The purpose of this blog is to serve as a resource and showcase for the photography program of Philadelphia Academy! The PAPP (Philadephia Academy Photography Program) began in the fall of 2006 with 15 senior photographers. It has since grown to 32 photographers! The course is taught 100% digitally with students using Canon Rebel XT and XsI DSLR cameras. In addition, students manipulate and process their images using Adobe Photoshop. Once edited, students create galleries on Pbase.com, a world wide photo hosting website. The PAPP portfolio can be viewed at www.pbase.com/pachs.
